Surroundings and area
The name Hohe Bleichen gives an indication of the historical use of the area. Local craftsmen used to bleach laundry and lengths of fabric here, at that time still just outside the city gates, and traditionally laid them out to dry. Today, the site is home to an impressive, modern, small town square with a Mediterranean flair, which provides a brief respite amidst the tall buildings, and the area has been made accessible and tangible for pedestrians. Street space has been reduced. Spread across the square are 13 tall, 9 to 10 meter high and 60 year old thujas. They create an unusual, very urban aesthetic and are now an unmistakable feature of Hohe Bleichen.
